Changing Rails

Humans will learn to adapt to rapidly changing technologies or they will become dinosaurs - sooner rather than later.

This morning my neighbour and I were having a coffee together, just a stone's throw away from the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) tracks. They are replacing the rails with heavier steel. I mentioned to my neighbour friend that back in the 1950's my Uncle Walter was a laborer on a Section Gang with the Canadian National Railway in Kuroki Saskatchewan. Back then, there was almost no heavy equipment, just six strong men doing all the work.

Now, about ten machines are doing most of the work. There are very few labourers. A woman is operating the laser machine driving the spikes into the ties. There you go! Machines and women taking all the jobs away from us guys. ( That last comment is meant to be a joke, in case any female readers are offended.) I am a strong supporter of the best person for the job - male, female, or anywhere along the LGBTQ spectrum.

Anyhow, I talked to one of the workers and took a few photos.

I conclude that unless we humans can find ways to provide meaningful occupations at a living wage for everyone, I believe rioting, turmoil and unrest will be the rule rather than the exception.

Stay safe my friends.

Good commentary.

They are installing heavier rails to carry heavier loads, such as oil.

Would a pipeline be better?

The last time Marge and I were on a train was from Vancouver to Winnipeg.

We were a whole DAY late to arrive in Winnipeg!

We had to wait on sidings to allow freight trains to pass in the other direction.

I guess there is only a single line going through the Rockies.

I was always fascinated by trains. I volunteered for the Prairie Dog Central as a fireman for several years on the locomotive built in 1882.

I remember your mother telling you to stay off the railway tracks. I guess once in a lifetime is okay.

Just as long as technology never takes away trains!
